In Biblical Hebrew, the four-letter divine name Yod-He-Vav-He (יהוה) is called the Tetragrammaton - literally means “the four letters.”

The letters Yod (י), He (ה), Vav (ו), He (ה) roughly correspond to the sounds Y-H-W-H or Yahweh in English transliteration.

The name YHWH derives from the Hebrew root היה (hayah) — “to be,” “to exist,” or “to become.”

When God explains His name to Moses in Exodus 3:14 — “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh” (אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה) — it means “I Am That I Am” or “I Will Be What I Will Be.”

Thus YHWH(Yahweh) expresses the self-existent, eternal being of God — the One who is, was, and will be.

In ancient Hebrew mysticism and Kabbalistic symbolism, the letters of “YHWH” are not viewed as arbitrary. They’re seen as archetypal shapes that represent the divine pattern of creation — including the form of the human being, made “in the image of God.”

The Deeper Teaching

Kabbalists interpret the Tetragrammaton as the pattern of the human form:

• Yod = Divine spark/ the head (divine idea)
• First He = Breath / shoulders and arms (expression)
• Vav = torso/spine (connection between heaven and earth)
• Final He = the legs or foundation (manifestation in the world)

In this view, the Name itself embodies the blueprint of Adam Kadmon — the “Primordial Man,” symbolizing divine consciousness manifested in physical form.

So no, it’s not merely coincidence.

The ancient scribes and mystics intentionally saw the Tetragrammaton as both a word and a form — the form of the Divine Presence within Man. That’s why Genesis says “Let us make man in Our image.”

The very shape of the Name expresses:

Spirit (Yod) → Breath (He) → Form (Vav) → Manifestation (He)

— a cosmic flow from the unseen to the seen, from God to humanity.
